LEHI — A Lehi man was sentenced Monday to serve a year in the Salt Lake County Jail for failing to file a tax return and tax evasion.

Scott S. Beal, 54, owner of Scott Beal Excavation, was ordered to spend 360 days in jail and pay almost $44,000 in back taxes for filing bogus returns and failing to file other returns.

Records from the State Tax Commission showed that Beal did not file income tax returns from 1996 and 2000 and that his company had earned more than $500,000 during that time, according to Charlie Roberts, commission spokesman.

Beal was sentenced in 3rd District Court on three second-degree felony counts of tax evasion and three third-degree felony counts for failure to file state income taxes, even after being found guilty March 3.
