LOGAN — BYU (30-14) swept a softball doubleheader with Utah State (5-32) on Tuesday, 10-0 and 9-6.
After playing 10 road games in 18 days, Utah State returned home to play in its third home game of the season where they were greeted by the hot-hitting Cougars. BYU jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning of the first game and never looked back.
BYU went on to add five more runs in the second inning on five hits as Jodi Norton and Cortney Nix both had two-run singles in the inning. BYU's Summer Tobias struck out seven batters and held the Aggies to just two hits.
Utah State had a 6-5 lead in Game 2, but the Cougars added two runs in the top of the sixth and then sealed the 9-6 win as Norton hit a two-run shot in the seventh. Norton's blast was her second home run of the game, and the fourth by the Cougars in the nightcap.
SUU 16-10, UVSC 1-2: Southern Utah swept a softball doubleheader from Utah Valley State (13-29), 16-1 and 10-2, on Tuesday in Cedar City.
In the first game, SUU led 7-0 after two innings. Utah Valley scored its only run in the third before Southern Utah added a run in the third and eight in the fourth. The Wolverines had seven hits in the game, two coming from Rachel Hartgrove.
In the second game, Utah Valley jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Southern Utah tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning and the Wolverines countered with another run in the top of the fourth inning to retake the lead at 2-1.
But Southern Utah then scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead and followed with six runs in the sixth to put the game away.
The Wolverines play a single game at BYU on Thursday at 6 p.m.
