Abdul Hakeem Khalaf, 7, waits as ocularist Walter T. Tillman III paints his prosthetic eye in Pittsburgh, Pa., Friday. Abdul's left eye was destroyed and his face was disfigured in an April 2004 blast at his home in Fallujah, Iraq, that also badly damaged his left eyelid and socket, jaw and cheek. A Massachusetts philanthropist has donated $50,000 toward the boy's surgery, and the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh plans to foot the bill if costs run beyond that. Three surgeons are treating him for free.
