A 21-year-old man told police he was the victim of an unprovoked attack Tuesday night while driving through Sandy.
The man and a 19-year-old female passenger were in a pickup truck on 1300 East near 10200 South about 6:30 p.m. when the driver of a car traveling in the opposite direction gave him an obscene gesture with his hand and yelled at him, said Sandy Police Sgt. Victor Quezada.
The driver of the truck kept going but the man who delivered the gesture did a U-turn and continued following, Quezada said.
The victim pulled into the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant, where two men got out of the pursuing car and assaulted him, Quezada said.
Restaurant patrons broke up the fight, but not before the man had been pulled out of his truck and beaten while lying on the ground.
The pickup driver was taken to the hospital to be treated for numerous cuts and bruises on his face and a "mild to moderate" concussion, Quezada said. He was later released.
As of Wednesday afternoon, police were still looking for the attackers.
