GYMNASTICS: Eight Southern Utah University gymnasts have earned academic all-WAC recognition, the conference announced today. Seniors Sheena Shaw, Rachel Tanner and Nicole Cummings; juniors Jessica Langley, Leah Sakhitab and Ashley Sharpe; and sophomores Tehani Keeno and Erin Morgan all had at least a 3.00 GPA and appeared in at least 50 percent of the team's meets.
BASEBALL: Southern Utah rode a pair of strong pitching performances from Kasey Hubbard and Larry Ellenbrook, while the T-Bird offense did just enough, as the Thunderbirds opened the Mid-Continent Conference portion of their 2006 baseball schedule by taking the first two games of a four-game weekend series from Valparaiso Friday at Thunderbird Park. SUU (16-10/2-0 Mid-Con) claimed the opener, 8-1, thanks to a two-hit, three-RBI game from Justin Sotelo, while the T-Birds rallied for two sixth-inning runs to outlast the Crusaders (4-17/0-2 Mid-Con), 3-2, in the seven-inning nightcap.
SOFTBALL: Centenary edged SUU to pick up both games Friday at Kathryn Berg Field. In a close decision Centenary came out on top 5-4 in game one and 11-7 in game two. SUU dropped 11-26 on the season and picked up their first two conference losses 4-2 while Centenary improved 23-17 and 7-3 during conference play.
BYU
WOMEN'S TENNIS: The BYU women's tennis team (14-6, 2-2) came out strong but couldn't hold on, losing 6-1 to No. 25 TCU (13-6, 4-0) Friday at the BYU Outdoor Tennis Courts. The Cougars will face New Mexico today at 11 a.m.
MEN'S TENNIS:The BYU men's tennis team (9-14, 2-0) has taken its motto of starting over with a clean slate and concentrating on conference play to heart, earning their second- straight conference victory over Air Force 5-2 to remain unbeaten in conference play. The 5-2 win outs BYU in good shape for its match with No. 29 TCU today in Albuquerque. The match begins at 10 a.m.
Utah State
SOFTBALL: Utah State's softball team was unable to pick up its first conference win as the Aggies were shutout 3-0 and 2-0 by Nevada in a doubleheader in Reno on Friday. The Aggies fell to 5-24 overall and 0-4 in WAC play with the losses, while the Wolfpack improved to 18-23 overall and 3-2 in the conference with the wins. The two teams play again today at 3 p.m.
