OREM — Visiting Utah flexed some serious offensive muscle Friday in sweeping a baseball doubleheader from Utah Valley State.

The Utes (16-12) took the first game 18-5 and beat the Wolverines (9-24) 12-6 in the nightcap.

In the first game Utah tied a 19 year-old single-game school record by hitting nine home runs, a feat that becomes even more impressive in light of the fact that, as the first half of a twin bill, the contest lasted only seven innings.

"We swung the bat pretty well today, probably about as well as we could swing it," Utah coach Bill Kinneberg said. "The ball was carrying very well early, for most of the first ballgame."

Utah first baseman Jay Brossman went a combined 9-for-11 and four Utes each hit two home runs.

"It's just one of those things where you're not really thinking about it during the game," Brossman said. "But after the game, you do look up and you just think, 'Wow, I had a pretty good day at the plate.'

"It feels good that as a team we hit the ball really well. We were all seeing the ball really big."

With the game seemingly out of the Wolverines' reach, UVSC coach Steve Gardner sent little-used Justin Williams to the mound for the top half of the seventh.

Pitching in only his second game of the season, Williams summarily proceeded to melt down. Six of the seven batters Williams faced reached base, and Utah second baseman Tyler Kmetko blasted a grand slam to left field.

When the dust settled and the top half of the seventh mercifully ended, the final body count was staggering: in one inning, the Utes totaled four home runs and nine runs to go ahead 18-2. Utah third baseman Erich Kemp spearheaded the rally with two home runs and four RBIs in just the seventh inning.

Utah won the nightcap 12-6. Sophomore pitcher Rory James (2-0) earned the win for the Utes by pitching five scoreless innings of relief. The 6-foot-10 James needed only 47 pitches to finish the game after starter Eric King gave up six runs in four-plus innings of work.

John Welsh hit two home runs for the Utes in the first game, while Ryan Khoury and Joe Mozeleski each hit one in both ends of the doubleheader.
