Mitch Richardson is right (Readers' Forum, April 5). There's nothing immoral about people coming here illegally. What he doesn't seem to understand is that our laws weren't designed to propagate moral principles, they exist to protect the common good of our citizens.
While sharing our wealth and taking in the world's poor may be the moral thing to do, it certainly isn't in our best interests. Importing Mexico's poor en masse will bankrupt our health care, welfare and education systems.
Our lottery system was supposed to ensure that discrimination would not be a factor in our immigration policies. By having such lax border protection we have ensured that only the poor and desperate make it to our country.
We must restore balance and equality by either accelerating immigration of the rich and educated or by giving amnesty to those already here and closing the boarder entirely.
