The recent decision by Tom DeLay, R-Texas, to forgo his congressional seat only underscores the extent of the scandal now enveloping this administration. In a world where political operatives work diligently to create a Republican-dominated government by and for Republicans, it is educational to watch as this house of sand begins to crumble under scrutiny.
The idea that lobbyists exist to educate our legislators is certainly the ultimate oxymoron since lobbyists exist for the single purpose of getting legislation that favors the interests of those they represent.
This is not to say that lobbyists do not serve a useful purpose; we just need to keep oversight over their activities so government keeps focus on the public interest. Our elected members of Congress need to maintain a strong sense of ethical behavior so they can do the people's business.
