RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. — Twins Bob and Mike Bryan gave the United States a 2-1 lead with a lopsided doubles victory Saturday over Adrian Garcia and Paul Capdeville, late substitutes for Chile.

The Bryans, ranked No. 1 in doubles, overpowered the Chilean reserves 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 in Saturday's only match of the quarterfinal.

Bob, the left-handed Bryan brother, dominated with his serves, winning 27 consecutive points when serving. Many of his first serves were in the mid 130-mph range, and his spinning, high-bouncing second serves also befuddled the Chileans.

He finished 28-of-29, losing his only point on serve when he and his brother had match point in the final game.

Fernando Gonzalez and Nicolas Massu, 2004 Olympic gold medalists in doubles, were scheduled to face the Bryans, but Chile captain Hans Gildemeister made a strategic — and logical — decision to give those two the day off after they played singles on Friday.

Gonzalez was still sore from his five-set marathon victory over James Blake that lasted 4 hours, 20 minutes. If Gildemeister had held only Gonzalez out of the doubles, Massu would have had to team with one of the reserves and likely had little chance against the Bryans.

Chile's captain said Gonzalez practiced some Saturday morning and was still achy, thus his decision to go with Garcia and Capdeville.

"We are still alive," the Chilean coach said. "In the beginning, my idea was to be alive on Sunday, because on Sunday, anything can happen, especially knowing Fernando and Nicolas."

Dean Goldfine, who's filling in for U.S. captain Patrick McEnroe, said he probably would have made the same decision, and "Once you've pulled one of them out, you might as well pull them both out."

Although the Bryans said earlier they were eager to avenge their Athens Olympics loss to Gonzalez and Massu, they were relieved when they found out 45 minutes before the match at Mission Hills Country Club that they instead would face Chile's reserves.

"We were real happy to see that they put the less experienced guys on the court," Bob Bryan said. "We just outplayed them from the first ball, never felt pressured."
