Every year around budget time, the UEA complains about the low salaries of Utah teachers. However, an ample supply of teachers and relatively high test scores historically gave the state no incentive to raise salaries. If enough people are willing to do the job for the pay, the pay must be adequate. If the state is finally running short on people willing to teach in our schools, the salaries will be increased. The UEA will undoubtedly claim credit for securing raises for Utah's teachers that will actually be the result of stark economic realities, reflecting an unfortunate waste of union dues paid by our underpaid teachers.
