A fire burning in Fishlake National Forest was contained Friday and others burning in the state were close to being controlled. But new restrictions on fires will be in order starting Monday.
The Sunset Canyon fire, burning five miles southeast of Meadow in Millard County, has burned 1,100 acres and is putting out heavy smoke as it is burns heavier fuels and smolders in trees. Crews expect to continue suppression and rehabilitation measures in the area throughout the weekend.
Another fire, only 200 acres in size, is burning on Mount Majestic within Zion National Park. Crews are monitoring its progress, and a couple of campsites along the West Rim Trail have been closed.
Several fires in San Juan County were being utilized as wildland management tools to reduce buildup of dead and downed fuels. Smoke is visible along U.S. 89.
The Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service have advised that beginning Monday, the use of open fires or camp fires, including charcoal briquettes, except in developed recreation sites, will be prohibited. Smoking is also banned except in enclosed vehicles or buildings and other designated areas.
