SPRINGVILLE — Several fire engines and a ladder truck were on the scene of a fire Friday night at the Kolob 2nd/4th LDS ward building, which was rededicated by President Gordon B. Hinckley in 1998.

The historic building, constructed during an eight-year-long project in 1913, was swamped with heavy smoke from the blaze, which started at about 10:40 p.m.

President Hinckley visited the church after a $1.5 million renovation project. The renovation featured an organ loft for the pipe organ that used to be in the rear of the chapel. The stained glass windows and high-arched ceilings were restored, and new electrical heating and cooling systems were installed.

The Norman-style building was first dedicated by Elder Reed Smoot, former member of the Quorum of the Twelve.

During the Depression, the members of the church community raised nearly $60,000 to pay for an addition dedicated by former Church President Heber J. Grant.
