JOHOR BAHRU, Malaysia — More than 80 youth of the Singapore Stake enjoyed activities encouraging them to "Arise and Shine Forth," the theme of their youth conference held June 5-8.
Young men and women from the stake's eight wards, along with their leaders traveled to Desaru Golden Beach in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to join their peers who are members of the stake's branch there for the conference.
Usually, the conference is preceded by a service project. But because the conference was moved up a week this year, the service project followed on June 17, according to public affairs missionary Sister Ann Castleton. The project involved cleaning East Coast Beach in Singapore with, again, more than 80 youth taking part.
One of the participants, Kandace Lim of the Woodlands Ward, said, "We were warm and sticky, but just one look at the trash we'd collected was enough to make us feel a sense of accomplishment and encouragement."
She said the group learned about the importance of their project from preliminary instructions given by member of the National Environmental Agency. She said she learned that "we should do our part to keep Singapore litter free. By simply throwing our bits of trash in the bins, it will indeed make Singapore cleaner and greener."
