MILFORD, Beaver County — Firefighters on Sunday were battling the Flats 2 fire, about 10 miles southwest of here — one of five lightning-sparked fires that began Saturday in Beaver County, the Color Country Interagency Fire Center said.
The fire had burned about 950 acres and was more than 90 percent contained Sunday.
The nearby Flats 3 fire, which started late Saturday, had burned about 316 acres. Two crews worked on that fire Sunday and were expected to reach containment by the end of the day.
Firefighters continued to make progress Sunday on containing two fires in the Reilly Complex west of St. George, according to the Rocky Mountain National Incident Management Team.
But the emphasis on Sunday shifted to containing the Red Hills fire. Three 20-person crews were taken by helicopter to the eastern flank of the fire, where they used hand tools — aided by helicopter bucket drops — to secure the east and northeast sides of the fire.
The Reilly Complex fires began Monday and have burned more than 7,300 acres.
Fire managers, in conjunction with local land agencies, are already planning for the restoration of areas affected by the Reilly and Red Hills fires, the management team said in a press release.
"Some actions, such as constructing water bars and erosion prevention, will be implemented before suppressions crews leave the fires," the release said. "Other work, such as seeding and drainage enhancement, will be evaluated in coming weeks."
