The National Weather Service is investigating a report that a tornado may have been seen in southern Utah Sunday afternoon.

A photo taken near Beaver about 4 p.m. shows what could be "a weak tornado," said Alex Tardy, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office on North Temple.

So far, he said Sunday night, "because there are some fires in those areas, too, and it could have been something associated with a fire or a dust devil." There was another report of at least one tornado seen in the area, he said.

"The radar shows the storms through there, in that area, around 4 o'clock," Tardy added.

Also, a Salt Lake man called the Deseret Morning News, saying his son had telephoned him by cell phone after spotting what he believes were two tornadoes. The younger man saw them while traveling toward his home in Las Vegas. He was near mile marker 146 at the time, which is about 7 miles southwest of Kanosh, Millard County.
