OGDEN CANYON — A 60-year-old man collapsed and died while hiking in the canyon Saturday.

The man, whose name has not been released, had been hiking alone in the canyon and was about a mile and half up a trail when he passed out, said Jeff Lasater, spokesman for the Weber County Sheriff's Department.

Three hikers found the man lying unconscious on the trail but still breathing, said Lasater. One of the hikers tried to perform CPR while another used a cell phone to call 911.

Lasater said that by the time search and rescue reached the man he was dead. The cause of death is unknown, but officials suspect it was either a heart attack or heat exhaustion.

Lasater said the exact cause of death will not be determined until an autopsy is performed.
