June Smith Handy 1926 ~ 2006 OGDEN - June Smith Handy, age 80, our pure and beautiful angel wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, July 29, 2006. She was born on June 28, 1926, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the fourth child of George William and Margaret Ethel Larsen Smith. June had a unique childhood growing up in City Creek Canyon from 1932 to 1942. Educated in Salt Lake City, she was a proud West High Panther and graduated from the University of Utah in 1948 with degrees in English and French along with her teaching certificate. At the U. she affiliated with Delta Delta Delta Sorority and served as president. She was also a member of Spurs and the Pan-Hellenic Council. After graduation she taught French in the Salt Lake City Schools. On March 31, 1950, June married George B. Handy in the Salt Lake LDS Temple thereafter moving to Ogden where she lived for 56 years. June was a devout and committed member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving willingly as a teacher and auxiliary leader in her wards and stakes. She was president of the Highland Ward Relief Society and served as an ordinance worker in the Ogden LDS Temple. June loved her Savior and His gospel and her life was one of service to others. After her children were grown, she taught French and English at Mount Ogden Jr. High as well as English as a Second Language at Hill Air Force Base for the Ogden School District. June was a member of the Mystae Literary Club for many years and was active in the Jr. League of Ogden. She and her husband served as Grand Marshals over the Ogden Pioneer Days Celebration in 1987. She loved reading, fine music, and art. More than anything else, she loved and supported her six children and 22 grandchildren attending hundreds of basketball and other games, recitals, concerts, speeches, etc. She used to say it wasn't basketball she loved, it was her children. June personified class, grace, and elegance in every respect and was known for her style and sophistication - truly an elect lady. She made us laugh with her unique sense of humor and relished organizing family parties as a way of strengthening family relationships. June is survived by her devoted and loving husband, George, of Ogden along with her six children: Stephen G. (Holly) Handy, Layton; Susan (Kirk) Sanders, Maple Grove, MN; Mark D. Handy, Salt Lake City; Elaine Reintjes, Ogden; Anne (Raymond) Jones, Centerville; and Preston L. (Kathleen) Handy, Salt Lake City. June's grandchildren are: Katelyn, Garrett, Brett, Megan, Stephanie, Lauren, Ryan, Leigh, Erin, Emily, Christopher, Lisa, Rachel, Alexandra, Lexie, McKenzie, Cole, Brock, Max, Kate, Lindsay and Nick. June was just getting to know her six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Vernon A. Smith, Salt Lake City, an "adopted daughter," Francine Giani Luczak, and daughter-in-law, Patricia LaTulippe. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Helen Stewart, and brother, Neil G.
