Weeds in culinary water? Sounds possible but not likely considering the amount of treatment our culinary water undergoes.

The more likely source of weeds in Earl Elmont's yard (Readers' Forum, July 30) is wind. Seeds blowing into his yard from his neighbor's yard would get caught on the edge of the landscape where there is a transition from hardscape to lawn. Also, lawn on the edge of landscapes is usually more stressed and therefore more susceptible to intrusion by weeds. Weed seeds spread by a culinary system would end up spread throughout the landscape rather than on the edges.
