HALL OF FAME
Bruce Sutter was inducted Sunday into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Although Sutter was the lone player selected by the Baseball Writers Association of America, he was part of the largest class of inductees in Hall of Fame history. A 17-person class of players and executives from baseball's segregated past, all of them deceased, also were inducted, including Effa Manley, the first woman to be so honored. Sutter follows Hoyt Wilhelm, Rollie Fingers and Dennis Eckersley as the only relief pitchers elected.
GRAND FEAT
New York Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran tied a major league record Sunday with his third grand slam this month in a 9-6 victory over Atlanta. Beltran's second-inning slam was his 31st homer of the season and New York's record-tying sixth slam in July. The drive also broke the team record for most homers by a center fielder in a season, one better than Mike Cameron's 30 set in 2004 . He then hit his 32nd homer in the fifth inning for his fourth multihomer game of the season. Beltran became the ninth player in major league history to hit three grand slams in a calendar month, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Devon White was the last to accomplish the feat, doing it for Milwaukee in May 2001. The Mets' six slams this month matches the major league record set by the Montreal Expos in April 1996 and matched by Cleveland in May 1999.
STRONG IN DEFEAT
Florida's Josh Willingham hit two home runs and had four RBIs, but the Marlins lost to Philadelphia in the first game of the doubleheader 11-5.
MOVING ON UP
Mike Mussina won his fifth straight decision in the Yankees' 4-2 win over Tampa Bay on Sunday. Mussina (13-3) allowed only five hits and struck out eight. He has not lost since June 15. The win was also the 237th of his career, passing Whitey Ford and tying Clark Griffith and Waite Hoyt for 55th place on the career list.
