Ute quarterback Brian Johnson will redshirt this season, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham announced Thursday. Johnson, a junior who suffered a serious knee injury in the Utes' loss to New Mexico last season, did not participate in Thursday's scrimmage.
Senior Brett Ratliff and junior Tommy Grady will compete for the starting quarterback spot. An announcement could come as early as this weekend as the Utes prepare for the Sept. 2 opener at UCLA.
