Although they're still in the intensive care unit at Primary Children's Medical Center, Kendra and Maliyah Herrin are improving steadily, according to hospital spokeswoman Bonnie Midget. And they have been feeling well enough to play for several days now.
The girls, who were born joined at the abdomen and were separated in a surgery that spanned Aug. 7 and 8, likely will leave intensive care for a regular hospital room sometime in the next few days, Midget said Saturday.
More personal milestones are being recorded by parents Erin and Jake Herrin on their online updates at Herrintwins.com. Saturday, they reported they were able to hold Maliyah for the first time on Friday, something they have not yet been able to do with Kendra because her wounds need to heal more.
The Herrins, of North Salt Lake, also reported the girls took their first wagon rides, as twins who are no longer conjoined, in a race that ended in a tie.
Surgeons separated the twins' organs, including the liver and large intestine. Because Maliyah lost her access to Kendra's kidney, she is on dialysis until she can get a transplant from her mother, likely in several months.
