INJURED

New York Yankees pitcher Carl Pavano has a pair of broken ribs, sustained in a mid-August car accident that the oft-injured right-hander didn't tell the team about until Monday. Pavano, who hasn't played in the major leagues since June 27, 2005, is scheduled for a medical checkup Tuesday and remains on track to make his final rehabilitation start Wednesday for Triple-A Columbus at Durham. Pavano said he was hurt early Aug. 15 in West Palm Beach, Fla., when on a rainy night his car hit a puddle, spun out of control and hit a truck that was at a stop sign. ... Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was scheduled to leave the team Tuesday and return to Boston to be examined again for an irregular heartbeat. Big Papi was a late scratch for Boston's 9-0 loss at Oakland on Monday night for what was first thought to be the flu. Ortiz, who on Sunday hit his major league-leading 47th home run at Seattle, already spent time in a Boston hospital earlier this month for the condition.

STREAKING

The New York Mets have won nine of 10 to increase their NL East lead to a season-high 15 1/2 game over Philadelphia after a 8-3 win over the Phillies Monday.

SUPER SIZEMORE

Grady Sizemore homered, doubled twice and scored three runs to help lift Cleveland over Toronto 6-4 Monday night. Sizemore leads the league with 75 extra-base hits, two more than Boston's David Ortiz. Sizemore also leads the league in runs (107) and doubles (46). Sizemore needs one triple to become the first player in Cleveland history to have two straight seasons of double digits in doubles, triples, homers and stolen bases.

EIGHT STRAIGHT

Rookie Josh Johnson lowered his major league-leading ERA to 2.87, and Florida extended its winning streak to eight with a 4-2 victory over Milwaukee on Monday night. Johnson (12-6) won his third straight decision, striking out seven in a season-high 7 2-3 innings and is tied for second in wins among rookies with Minnesota's Francisco Liriano and three behind Detroit's Justin Verlander.

SPEAKING

"I just looked at it 10,000 times in there. It didn't hit the bag. You can see space between it and the bag. We got three or four different angles on it." — Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel who was ejected for arguing after Mets' third baseman David Wright was credited with an RBI single on a ball that was originally ruled foul but later judged to have hit third base.
