VOLLEYBALL: Nobody's perfect, but Lori Baird was close as she led the University of Utah volleyball team (6-2 overall) to its fourth straight win. Utah topped the Missouri State Bears, 3-0 (30-22, 30-20 and 30-13), in the final match of the Utah Classic Saturday.

Utah hit a smooth .383 for the match, but that was buoyed by the efforts of Baird. She set Utah's single-match record in hitting a scorching .923 today. She had 12 kills on 13 attempts without committing a single error.

SOCCER:Rebecca Mackelprang led the University of Utah cross country team Saturday as it took fifth at the BYU Autumn Classic here this afternoon. Mackelprang was sixth in the 5K event, clocking the course in 19:00. She paced the Utes who scored 123 points.

Utah State

VOLLEYBALL: Melissa Larson recorded six kills to go along with a season-high seven blocks to lead Utah State's women's volleyball team to a three-game win (30-27, 30-15, 30-21) against Temple in the final match of the 2006 Utah Classic Saturday.

Utah State, who finished in third place in the tournament with a 1-2 record, improved to 5-4 on the season with the win, while Temple finished in fourth-place and is now 5-5 on the year. Utah won the tournament with a 3-0 record, while Missouri State went 2-1 to finish second.

Southern Utah

SOCCER: Southern Utah forward Shaley Ipson scored two first-half goals in a span of 38 seconds and that proved to be all the scoring needed as the Thunderbirds blanked Cal Baptist, 2-0, in SUU's home opener Saturday afternoon at the T-Bird Soccer Field.

CROSS COUNTRY: Southern Utah's men's cross country team finished a strong fourth, while the T-Bird women posted a seventh-place showing, at the 2006 UC Irvine Collegiate Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning at Central Park.
