A Salt Lake City police officer is on paid leave pending the investigation of a fatal shooting of a man apparently involved in a home-invasion burglary Friday night.
Police responded to 181 E. Yale Ave. (1080 South) shortly after 11 p.m. after the home's owner said an armed, masked man tried to force his way in. Police Lt. Mike Ross said residents of the home reported the man fired one shot but did not hit anyone.
When an officer arrived, Ross said, the man fled on foot and the officer gave chase. About eight blocks away, on Westminster Avenue (1910 South) at 200 East, Ross said, the man turned and fired once at the officer, missing him. The officer returned fire, killing the man.
As of Saturday afternoon, police said they did not have information about the suspect and were using the man's fingerprints in an attempt to identify him. Police said after the man is identified they will attempt to notify his family before releasing his name.
The officer involved in the shooting will remain on paid leave until an investigation is completed by the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office.
