Barring something unexpected, Kendra and Maliyah Herrin will sleep in their own beds tonight, at home in North Salt Lake.
It will mark a huge milestone in a journey that began four years ago when they were born joined at the abdomen. Doctors at Primary Children's Medical Center separated them Aug. 7 and 8 in a complex, 26-hour surgery.
The girls, daughters of Jake and Erin Herrin, have been hospitalized since June when surgeons began the process of stretching their skin, using small balloons that were filled with fluid, so there would be enough skin to cover them once they were separated.
The twins are expected to leave the hospital sometime today for the short trip home, where they will continue their recovery surrounded by their parents and sister Courtney, 6, and twin brothers Justin and Austin, 15 months.
