CASS SCENIC RAILROAD: Cass, W.Va.; or 800-225-5982. Departures through Oct. 28. Trips to Whittaker Station ($15-$18), Bald Knob and Spruce ($21-$24). The railroad also rents 13 original, refurbished "company" houses in Cass, as well as a wilderness cabin in the Monongahela National Forest. Riders can spend the night in one of three cabooses equipped with a coal stove and sink. The cabooses are hauled to the top of Cheat Mountain and unhooked. The locomotive returns in the morning for the ride back to Cass. Restaurants are miles away, but Meck's Bakery, a Mennonite kitchen famous for sweet rolls and fruit pies, is on state Route 66 east of Cass, about a mile from the Route 28/92 intersection. The train-themed Boyer Station, four miles south of Bartow on Routes 28/92, features homemade lasagna and a "flat car" steak hoagie with chili and fixings.

POTOMAC EAGLE: Romney, W.Va.; or 304-424-0736. Departures through Oct. 28 ($30-$100). Route follows the South Branch of the Potomac River through The Trough valley, where eagles are often spotted.

DURBIN & GREENBRIER VALLEY RAILROAD: Elkins, W.Va.; or 877-686-7245. New Tygart Flyer train ($30-$55) offers trips to a waterfall and to Belington. Cheat Mountain Salamander train ($25-$45) runs to High Falls and Spruce/Big Cut. Durbin Rocket, a steam-powered excursion on the Greenbrier River ideal for kids, scheduled to run Oct. 1-December. Riders also can buy an overnight package with wilderness accommodations for up to six adults in the Castaway Cabooses.
