Street in Provo is evacuated after natural gas leak

PROVO — A neighborhood street was evacuated Friday afternoon after an out-of-control tractor of a semitrailer truck caused a natural gas leak.

A local excavation company had a subcontractor working on Sherwood Drive, Provo Police Chief Tom Kuhlmann said. The contractor parked a semi-tractor at the top of the hill. The brake failed, the tractor rolled down the hill and struck a Questar regulator station. Natural gas immediately began spewing from the ground.

Kuhlmann said police evacuated houses within a block radius of the leak. Questar crews arrived on scene and secured the leak.

No one was injured, and people were allowed to reoccupy their houses later in the afternoon, Kuhlmann said.
