WEST VALLEY CITY — The Utah Grizzlies defeated the Victoria Salmon Kings 4-1 Saturday night at the Acord Ice Center in ECHL preseason play.
Utah jumped up 1-0, with Keith Johnson rolling the puck past Bryan Bridges at 9:40 of the first period. Each team then split power-play goals, with Ryan Kinasewich setting up James Sanford (one goal, one assist) from behind the net and Utah had a 2-1 lead. The Grizzlies outshot Victoria 16-4 in the first period.
After a scoreless second, Kinasewich added a Utah insurance goal 14:12 into the third period, blasting a power-play shot from the slot. Rob Sirianni then added an empty-netter in the final minute.
Mike Mole stopped 25 of 26 Victoria shots in the game. Utah outshot the Salmon Kings 38-26.
The Grizzlies open the regular season Friday in Phoenix against the RoadRunners. Faceoff is scheduled for 8:11 p.m. Utah's home-opening weekend is Friday, Oct. 26 and Saturday,
Oct. 27 when they host Idaho at the E Center.
