Oracle makes a $6.7B bid to purchase BEA Systems

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Software giant Oracle made a big move Friday to dominate the market for so-called "middleware" that integrates computer servers and databases with applications on the Internet, announcing an unsolicited bid to buy BEA Systems for about $6.7 billion.

BEA rejected Oracle's offer, although late in the day, Oracle released a letter from its president, Charles Phillips, to BEA suggesting Oracle believed it had a deal and had expected to meet with BEA management to reach an agreement by next Monday. It would be Oracle's largest acquisition since PeopleSoft in 2004.
