SANDY — A woman is in critical condition and her husband is dead after an attempted murder-suicide inside their home here.
Sandy police said they received a 911 call at 1:49 a.m. today from 56-year-old Kathy Scanlan, saying she was awakened by her husband who was "on top of her and stabbing her," Sandy police Sgt. Victor Quezada said.
Scanlan told police she was still in her house but didn't know where her husband, 55-year-old Alefosio Scanlan, was. She also said she was losing consciousness and would not be able to open the door, Quezada said.
"She told officers they were going to have to force entry into the home," he said.
When officers arrived at the house, 11751 S. Stone Valley Way (1020 East), they broke through the locked front door to get in and found the woman lying on the staircase with two knife wounds to her chest.
Officers went through the house and found Alefosio Scanlan dead of a stab wound to the chest. Police believe he killed himself.
A motive for the attack was unknown this morning. Quezada said police had no record of any problems at the home, and neighbors described the couple as nice, quiet and easy-going.
The woman was flown by medical helicopter to a local hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
