Volleyball team bounces back after loss

Wolverines lose 2 games on the road in women's soccer

OREM — UVSC's women's volleyball team bounced back from a loss to BYU early last week in sweeping Cal State-Bakersfield in two matches this past weekend.

With the wins, UVSC now has a 14-6 record after winning nine of its last 10 matches.

"As hard as it is when you lose, what helps build your character and identify your team is how you bounce back," coach Sam Atoa said.

The first match last Friday was the easiest as the Wolverines took a 3-0 (31-29, 30-23, 30-27) win. Jessica Endres helped carry the team with 12 kills, five blocks and a .409 hitting percentage.

In a close first game, UVSC trailed 18-11 before a 7-2 run cut the gap. Down 26-28, UVSC scored the next three points to take a lead that the team would not relinquish.

On Saturday, the Wolverines came back from a 2-1 deficit to take the Roadrunners in five games (30-24, 28-30, 29-31, 30-24, 15-12).

Camie Manwill and Kayli Broadbent led UVSC's defense with 27 and 26 kills apiece respectively.

"It's great to see Kayli be consistent with more and more playing time," Atoa said.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: The Wolverines dropped a pair in their Midwest swing to South Dakota State and North Dakota State to put their record at 2-11-1 for the year.

UVSC lost 1-0 to North Dakota State on Friday in which it had several chances for the equalizer. Lauren Booth's apparent game-tying goal in the 88th minute was disallowed as she was called for a hand ball in the penalty area.

Not fairing better on Sunday against South Dakota State, the Wolverines were blasted 7-1 by the Jackrabbits.

South Dakota State took a 2-0 lead with goals in the 16th and 18th minutes to gain the early advantage.

CROSS COUNTRY: The men's and women's cross country teams had their best combined performance as they both took first in the Southern Utah Color Country Invitational.

For the men, it was the best team performance in the program's history as they won a meet for the first time.

Ayisha Mitchell finished first in the women's race with a time of 15:32. Karinne Bentley (third) and Mary Nothum (fifth) also placed in the top five in helping UVSC.

The men were led by Chase Englestead, who finished fifth, with Chris Dorton (eighth) and Derick Moody (ninth) rounding out the Wolverines who placed in the top 10.
