Religion led to Dark Ages

There is a great deal in Joe Cannon's column on Western culture and its Greek roots with which I agree (Sept. 30).

I would like to point out, however, that the reason Western civilization entered the Dark Ages is not because they abandoned their values, it is because they abandoned science, reason and logic in favor of religion. There has been no period in Western history in which religion so totally dominated all aspects of life as it did during the Dark Ages.
