AARP seeks volunteers for tax-help program

AARP Tax-Aide is seeking local volunteers to provide free income-tax assistance at tax-help sites across Utah.

AARP Tax-Aide helps with preparation and electronic filing of federal and state income-tax returns for free for people who cannot afford paid tax assistance, such as seniors, the disabled and low- to middle-income families.

Volunteers attend classes and must pass a test of basic income-tax knowledge in order to be certified to participate in the program. Volunteers are provided materials and support to become IRS-certified and will be trained to use IRS tax-preparation software to electronically file returns.

During tax season, Tax-Aide volunteers are asked to provide tax counseling one or two days per week. Local civic or fraternal bodies, educational institutions, churches, social groups and senior centers can request participation or offer to host a site.
