Defense shines as Hawaii soars to No. 16 ranking

HONOLULU — Hawaii coach June Jones usually spends most of his weekly press conferences answering questions about his prolific passer, skillful receivers or the big offensive numbers. Defense dominated the discussion Monday.

Contrary to popular belief, Jones said the 16th-ranked Warriors (5-0, 2-0 Western Athletic Conference) are the best defensive team in his nine seasons at Hawaii.

With quarterback Colt Brennan recovering from a right ankle injury and struggling to find his range throwing a school record five interceptions, Hawaii showed it was more than an offensive team in Saturday's 48-20 victory over Idaho.

In the win, the Warriors forced five interceptions, recorded five sacks and set the tone by holding the Vandals to 303 total yards of offense.
