Southern Utah will play its first conference game today — and its first game against an unranked opponent.
The Thunderbirds (0-6) take on UC Davis (2-5) in Cedar City today at 1 p.m. in Eccles Coliseum.
SUU is coming off two of its best all-around performances of the season in the past two weeks. Last Saturday, the Thunderbirds led then-No. 12 Youngstown State through most of the game before falling behind late and eventually dropping a 23-22 decision in Youngstown, Ohio.
A week earlier, SUU put a scare into then-No. 13 Montana State. The Thunderbirds outgained the Bobcats by 100 yards and held them to 56 yards of offense in the second half but missed opportunities to win the game.
SUU has also lost to Montana, North Dakota, Southern Illinois and McNeese State, teams all ranked in the FCS (formerly I-AA) or Division II polls.
UC Davis has lost three straight after opening the season 2-2. The Aggies are coming off a home loss to Cal Poly in which they gave up 63 points and 704 total yards.
