Davis snaps losing skid against SUU

CEDAR CITY — Matt Engle passed for 295 yards and three touchdowns to lead UC Davis to a 41-21 win over Southern Utah on Saturday.

Brandon Tucker rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns for the Aggies (3-5, 1-2 Great West), who had lost three straight before beating the winless Thunderbirds (0-7, 0-1).

Wes Marshall passed for 237 yards and two touchdowns for Southern Utah.

The Thunderbirds kept it close through three quarters. After Tucker scored on a 1-yard run for UC Davis, Johnny Sanchez answered with a 3-yard scoring run for Southern Utah with 4:03 left in the period.

Marshall threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Edwards midway through the fourth quarter that brought the Thunderbirds within 28-21. Engle added a 27-yard touchdown pass to Grant Bakari, and Jeremy Scott clinched it with a 38-yard interception return for a touchdown with 2:33 left.

"I thought we played well early in the game," SUU coach Wes Meier said. "We were able to move the ball and able to stop them, but we weren't able to capitalize on a couple of scoring opportunities early and that wound up costing us."

Sanchez ran for 74 yards for the Thunderbirds.
