2A football preview: San Juan at North Summit

San Juan (6-4, 3-2) at North Summit (9-0, 5-0)

2A State Tournament quarterfinal

Saturday, noon

Parry's Power Guide: North Summit by 5

All-time series: San Juan leads 4-0.

Last meeting: 2006 semifinals, San Juan won 27-23

San Juan can't possibly pull the same rabbit out of its hat again this year, can it? In the 2006 semifinals, San Juan stunned No. 1 North Summit 27-23 thanks to a 28-yard touchdown pass from Dane Lyman to Bradley Royer with 37 seconds remaining in the game. The Broncos then advanced to the 2A title game and beat Millard.

This year the teams meet in the quarterfinals, and North Summit is once again No. 1 in 2A with a 9-0 record. The Braves are a better team this year than they were a year ago, and it's hard to imagine a similar upset — even though San Juan is 4-0 all-time against North Summit.

North Summit has gotten the job done this year with a high-scoring offense (34.2 ppg) and a stingy defense (12.9 ppg). Offensively the team is led by all-state running back Dallin Donaldson, who has already eclipsed 1,100 rushing yards this year. Chandler Woolstenhulme anchors the defense and is arguably the best defensive player in 2A.

San Juan beat Gunnison in last week's 2A play-in games, having missed out on clinching a first-round by when it lost to Richfield in overtime on Oct. 12. Lyman, one of the heroes of last year's title, is back for San Juan this year and he's already passed for 15 TDs and over 1,300 yards.
