Store clerk gives chase in robbery at Orem Wal-Mart

OREM — As if swiping DVDs from Wal-Mart wasn't enough, a 22-year-old man is in jail for also punching the store clerk who chased him down, Orem police said.

The man tried to walk out of the Orem Wal-Mart at 1355 S. Sandhill Road Monday morning with several boxed sets of DVDs and a large television, said Orem Police Lt. Doug Edwards.

An employee at the door asked to see the man's receipt. He took off running with the DVDs but left the TV behind, police said.

The employee gave chase, but the man kept throwing boxed sets backward in an attempt to stop the chase, Edwards said.

When the employee caught up, the man hit him in the face, then kept running, according to police.

Around the back of Wal-Mart, the movie snatcher tried to scale a fence and shake off the employee, who had latched on to the man's leg, Edwards said.

When the man shook himself free, he ended up falling and injuring his arm.

Police say an officer arrested the man two blocks later.

He proceeded to demand that Orem officers arrest the Wal-Mart employee for assaulting him and causing him to fall from the fence, Edwards said.

The man allegedly told police, "If that stupid kid hadn't followed me, none of this would have happened."

He was booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of robbery.
