3A football preview: Grantsville at Wasatch

Grantsville (3-7, 2-3) at Wasatch (7-3, 3-1)

3A State Tournament first-round game

Friday, 4 p.m.

Parry's Power Guide: Wasatch by 29

All-time series: Wasatch leads 31-15-1.

Last meeting: 2007 regular season, Wasatch won 37-8

What a difference one win can make.

Had it lost to Union on the final night of the regular season, Wasatch could've fallen all the way to Region 10's No. 4 playoff seed and faced what Park City faces — an unenviable trip to No. 1 Logan this Friday.

Instead, the No. 2 Wasps largely grounded Union QB Rhen Richard en route to a 24-21 win, as they clinched the No. 1 seed from Region 10 in the process.

It's hard to overstate how important that is.

Though Wasatch must not overlook its first round opponent or whomever it would meet in the quarterfinals, it's quite clear that the path is paved for the Wasps to make a semifinal appearance at Rice-Eccles Stadium for the first time in five years.

Wasatch's postseason run opens this Friday against Grantsville.

Wasatch running back Jake Salazar leads the state in carries (245) and has racked up 1,498 yards and 19 touchdowns.

However, what is often overlooked is the fact that Salazar has a stellar quarterback in front of him.

QB Taylor Woodruff has thrown for 1,753 yards and 14 touchdown passes, and he can be lethal when he rolls out to find tight end

Jeffrey Tukuafu or receiver Ethan Smith.

For Grantsville to have a chance, it must figure out a way to take away either Salazar or Woodruff and take its chances with the other one.

Offensively, running back Alex Childs must have a big day to bolster the Cowboys' offense, which only averages 11.6 ppg.
