Utah Valley preps of the week

Aubrey Muaina

Lone Peak Knights

Sport: Volleyball

Class: Junior

Position: Outside hitter

The numbers: "With Aubrey, it's just been fun to watch her growth potential," said Lone Peak coach Deanna Meyer about the player she says she's now able to count on in the clutch. "She's able to make key plays. If we need a kill and it's a critical moment, she can get it." And she's been showing that potential especially during the past couple of weeks. Muaina had eight kills and no errors against tough Pleasant Grove, hitting for just under .500 in the match.

Jonathan Nelson

Timpview Thunderbirds

Sport: Cross country

Class: Junior

The numbers: Last season Nelson was literally tooting his own horn. He played in the school band and didn't even run cross country much, competing only in a few junior varsity events. But he started training seriously during the past year, and boom - he won the individual state 4A cross country championship last week with a time of 15:49.5 on a cold, sloppy 3-mile course. He also helped the Thunderbirds to their second straight cross country team title. Nelson's win came after a fifth-place finish at the Region 7 meet.
