Salt Lake County to waive swimming-pool fees

Swimming entry fees are being waived at Salt Lake County's seven swimming pools for UEA weekend, which includes Friday through Tuesday, courtesy of Mayor Peter Corroon and the Salt Lake County Council.

The exception is anyone who wears diapers. Because of a recent cryptosporidium outbreak, the restriction on diaper wearers remains in force. The Wasatch Front experienced an outbreak of the malady, which causes long-lasting debilitating diarrhea, this summer, and thousands of residents became ill.

"We want Salt Lake Valley residents to feel safe in public pools," said Teresa Gray, Water Quality Manager, Salt Lake Valley Health Department. "It is never too early to start preparing for next summer's heat wave. An outbreak such as this year's is avoidable. " Information will be available at each pool on ways the public can protect themselves from water borne illnesses.

Check with your local facility for specific times for open plunge and lap swimming. The pools are Dimple Dell Recreation Center, 10670 S. 1000 East, 801-495-1480; Fairmont Aquatic Center, 1044 E. Sugarmont, 801-563-8440; Holladay-Lions Recreation Center, 1661 E. Murray-Holladay Road, 801-424-0621; Marv Jenson Recreation Center, 10300 S. Redwood Road, 801-253-4404; Steiner West Pool, 855 W. California Ave., 801-908-6231; SLC Sports Complex, 645 S. Guardsman Way, 801-583-9713.
