Obituary: Homer E. Blalock

Homer E. Blalock

1922 ~ 2007

Homer Elmo Blalock, 85, passed away October 26, 2007 after years of struggling with his health. He is finally at peace and free of pain.

Dad was born May 1, 1922 in Detroit, Michigan to Luther and Kittie Blalock. He joined the Merchant Marines in 1942, and served on the SS Steel Engineer. That same year he was given a commendation for his fast actions against a torpedo attack and saved the ship and the crew. After the Merchant Marines, dad joined the U.S. Army and served his tour in India.

In 1947 he married Myra Kehn, had one daughter, Susan; later divorced. In 1953 he married Lynn Rife, had three children, Kittie, Sandi, and Vickie. Lynn passed away in 1986. He married Betty Terry in 1993; later divorced.

Homer was an airline mechanic for TWA based in L.A. until his medical retirement in 1981. He continued his love of planes and was always up for a good air show or museum. He was also a master at creating stained glass pieces and was always making something for someone else to enjoy. Other hobbies he enjoyed were collecting all kinds of coins, he loved to go to train museums, he and Lynn enjoyed traveling to other countries and seeing different cultures. He also had a passion for playing billiards. In his later years, he won many senior tournaments here in Utah.

Dad was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Kittie Blalock; brothers, Ermine and Harold; sister, June Boor; and wife, Lynn. He is lovingly survived by his daughters, Vickie Sharp, Sandi (Michael) Smiley of Utah, Kittie Blalock of Arizona, and Susan Blalock of Michigan; grandchildren, Stacey, Stephanie and Brian (Jamie) Smiley of Utah, and Andrew and Jason Sharp, also of Utah, Kenneth (Paula) Soloff of Texas, Steven (Sharon) Soloff of Illinois, and Laurie (Eric) Rice of Arizona; nieces, Sherry Jones of CA, Ione Ronan of Michigan; nephews, Dan (Barbara) Boor of CA, and Robin (Debi) Blalock of Michigan.

The family gives special thanks to Susan Tisor and her family for all they did for dad.

Thank you also to Hearts for Hospice and "Our House" of Riverton for their care not only of dad but the family as well.

Per dad's request, there will be no services. He will be inurned at Redwood Memorial Estates in West Jordan Tuesday at 12 noon. Condolences may be either emailed to or sent to Sandi Smiley, P.O.
