1929 ~ 2007

Vernon Jess Chapman, age 78, passed away on October 25, 2007, in St. George. He was born July 3, 1929, in Chico, California, to Vernon Lorenzo Chapman and Sylvia Corinda Clapp.Vernon was raised in the bay area with his four sisters and two brothers. Everyone who could, worked to help support the family during the depression. Vernon worked as a carpenter with his dad. At the age of 12, the family moved to Utah.

Vernon graduated from West High School in 1946, and attended the U of U and BYU before being called to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the New England states.

After his return home, he married M. Dean Gosnell and together they had seven children, and adopted three more from the countless foster children they took in.

Vernon was drafted by the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, attaining the rank of Sergeant. His life work was in sales, selling water softeners and then later, life insurance. After 43 years of marriage he lost his sweetheart, never imagining he would meet another wonderful woman. He married Maxine Stephens July 23, 1994, and together they traveled, and served in the Jackson, Mississippi Mission.

Vernon became "Jess" to Maxine and together they watched their families grow to 31 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. They have lived the past 13 years in St. George where Maxine made our father very happy.

Jess has held countless callings and truly loved serving the Lord. He had a vast knowledge of the gospel and loved sharing his testimony. Dad, was nothing short of an exemplary husband, father and servant of the Lord. We are going to miss him.

Surviving family include his wife, Maxine; brothers, Don and Bob; sisters, Yvonne and Sylvia; sons, David Chapman, Mark Chapman, Phillip Chapman, Rudy and "Little" David; daughters, Leah Gibbons, Debbie Walker, Cindy Angell, Janet Rials and Letitia Siquenza; stepsons and daughters, Richard Smedley, Sherril Michaelson, Janet Stock; 31 grandchildren and 33 great-grand

children. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Mazil Dean; sisters, Darlene and Marilyn; and granddaughter, Anna.

Funeral services will be held Monday, October 29, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. in the St. George East Stake Center, 449 S. 300 E., St. George. Visitations will be held Sunday, October 28, 2007, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Spilsbury Mortuary and again Monday, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services, at the Stake Center. Interment will take place at Tonaquint Cemetery.
