Event to honor man after 36 Guard years

Utah Army National Guard senior noncommissioned officer Command Sgt. Maj. Dell Smith is retiring this week after 36 years in the Guard.

Smith of Springville will be honored today during a ceremony at the Guard's headquarters in Draper.

Utah National Guard adjutant general Maj. Gen. Brian Tarbet said Smith has taught him a lot over the years and that he has been a "tireless advocate for soldiers and airmen.

"He and his wife, Connie, are remarkable examples of service and devotion to others," Tarbet said in a statement. "He has been a wise counselor, true patriot, champion of our enlisted ranks and a great friend. I will miss his friendship more than I can express."

Command Sgt. Maj. Bruce Summers will take Smith's place. Summers enlisted in the Guard in 1971. More recently he led an 18-month deployment that took him to Iraq. Summers will leave his full-time job at Flying J in his hometown of Richfield to begin his new job at the Guard's headquarters in Draper.
