'Hispanics' aren't a race

Steve Condie (Readers' Forum, Oct. 3) needs some basic geography classes.

First, Scandinavia is actually part of Europe.

Second, Latin America is diverse. "Hispanics" are not a race per se but a culture shared by blacks, whites, Indians and various multiracial groups from the Rio Grande to Tierra del Fuego who speak Spanish and share similar cultures that mix Spanish, Indian and African elements. Furthermore, the U.S. Census does not consider "Hispanic" to be a race. It is entirely possible that the escapees — Danny Gallegos and Juan Diaz-Arevalo — are white, despite their olive skin and Spanish last names.
