'Culture' is no excuse

In the wake of Michael Vick's guilty plea for hanging and drowning some of his dogs because they didn't perform well in the fighting arena, some people are defending him by saying that in the South, dog fighting is a "cultural thing," thus implying that he should be given a light sentence, because he was "raised that way" and didn't know any better.

If one were to accept that logic, then one could also apply that same logic to any Ku Klux Klan member for lynching blacks. Another form of "Southern culture" is the Hog Dog Rodeo, where pigs are placed in an arena and families have great fun watching dogs tear them to pieces.

"Culture" is no excuse for harming another living creature.
