MANTI — An 83-year-old Bountiful man missing in a snowstorm for more than 24 hours was found safe Sunday with the help of rescue dogs and a helicopter.
Al Riggs was separated from his hunting party about noon Saturday, said Sanpete County Sheriff's Sgt. Greg Peterson. Search and Rescue crews were called out about five hours later.
They were able to find Riggs' all-terrain vehicle but had to quit searching when a storm created white-out conditions, Peterson said.
Sunday morning, the search resumed. Riggs was found at 5 p.m. and lifted from the mountain by a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter.
He had been dressed for the cold weather in a bright orange hunting coat, Peterson said. He also carried matches and was able to start a fire for warmth overnight.
