It is ironic and puzzling to hear that Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. wishes to cut drastically into the budget of the Utah Department of Environmental Quality, effectively shifting funding to roads and everything but teacher salaries. We wonder, has his enthusiasm for trade with China clouded his perceptions? Could the hubris of his lifelong Sinophilia (shared at this address) have clouded his vision of what China has become — an unmitigated environmental disaster? More funding for DEQ — much more — should be Utah's path for attracting businesses, luring investments and protecting residents. China will come to us soon enough.
