ANTHONY SKALABRIN, Cottonwood: Thanks in large part to the play of this junior, the Colts are in the midst of a six-game winning streak and are one victory away from capturing at least a share of the Region 6 championship.
Skalabrin began last week with a nine-point outing in Cottonwood's 38-35 win on Tuesday. Three nights later his 22 points paced the Colts to an easy 52-37 victory over Granger.
Skalabrin is averaging 12.2 points per game, just a fraction less than teammate Ben Canevari who's averaging 12.6 ppg.
Led by the junior duo, the Colts should make noise in this year's Class 4A tournament and will likely be a preseason favorite next year.
LACEE GLEAVE, Piute: This senior works as hard off the court as she does on, and she is the consummate team player.
She helped Piute to a successful season in which her team finished second in region.
"She brings hustle to the team," said coach Wade Westwood. "She hustles in everything she does. She likes to win, but she's one of those girls who basketball comes naturally to."
Gleave is an honor student and is an all-state volleyball player as well as a top-notch track athlete.
She was also a cheerleader for three years in high school.
