D. Omer Buttars 1916 ~ 2007 SOUTH OGDEN - D. Omer Buttars passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007 in Ogden, Utah surrounded by his loving family. His strong character had a powerful influence on his family and all those with whom he came in contact. He spent his lifetime serving others and bringing joy into their lives. However, his greatest accomplishment in life was his family. He devoted many of his final years serving his wife as she battled illness. He was born December 28, 1916 in Lewiston, Utah to Daniel David Buttars and Margaret Kent. On Sept. 4, 1940, Omer married Eunice Bingham in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They lived in Lewiston and Provo, Utah, Preston and Blackfoot, Idaho and in 1960, they settled in Ogden, Utah. For 22 years they enjoyed winters in Mesa, Arizona, where they made many friends and enjoyed outdoor activities. Omer's life was one of service to family, church and community. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holding several stake and ward callings including that of Bishop. He served a full-time mission in the Western States Mission from 1938 to 1940 and later served with his wife Eunice in Edinburgh, Scotland, where his love for the gospel and missionary work influenced those with whom he associated. Omer attended both Utah State University and Brigham Young University. After starting a family, he decided to leave the family farm to seek a career in the business world. In 1943, he started working full time for Anderson Lumber Company in Preston, Idaho. He found success quickly and was given many responsible positions within the company. He managed several locations and held the positions of Corporate Vice President and General Manager of the Ogden Division at the time of his retirement in 1983. Omer had a tremendous desire to serve within the city, county and state where his influence helped individuals, businesses and the economic environment. He received several distinguished service awards from Weber State College. He served as President of the following organizations: Ogden Chamber of Commerce, Credit Bureau of Ogden, Ogden Golf and Country Club, and the Rotary Club of Ogden. He was appointed to the Utah State Board of Regents in 1973 and served on the Utah State Building Board between 1980 and 1984. He was passionate about the game of golf, scoring several holes-in-one and winning many of Ogden Golf and Country Club tournaments. In his early years he enjoyed baseball, hunting and fishing with family and friends. Omer is survived by his children: Nedra (Bob) Petersen, Beverly (Dan) Hunter, Dan (Jan) Buttars, Kris (Blaine) Gibson, Cindy (Chad) Jones, Pam (Rob) Despain, 25 grand-children and 44 great-grand-children. He is preceded in death by wife Eunice, and daughter, RaNae (Keith) Larson. We would like to thank the Bonneville Dialysis Center and physicians. Omer truly appreciated the loving care he received each week. Funeral services will be held Mon. at 11 a.m. at the Pleasant Valley 4th Ward Chapel, 5640 South 850 East, with Bishop Michael King officiating.
